Letters of compliance

Please email letter of compliance requests to building@waterloo.ca. Please include a copy of your cheque by taking a clear photo or scanning your cheque and including it as an attachment in your email submission.

Cheques must be mailed in or dropped off at City Hall. The drop-off box is located beside the William Street entrance at City Hall. All submissions will be receiving an email response, no physical documentation will be sent out during this time.

Letters of compliance provide the following information:

  • current zoning and compliance with current use
  • pending zoning on property (if applicable)
  • compliance with building setbacks
  • status of building and plumbing permits on file
  • any zoning or property standard violations
  • any heritage significance

Application process

  1. Download, fill out and print a letter of compliance application (PDF).
  2. Submit complete application in person at the IPPW counter on the second floor of city hall, or by mail to: City of Waterloo Building Standards, 100 Regina Street South, PO Box 337 STN Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, N2J 4A8
  3. Pay applicable fee (find chart below). We accept cash, cheque or debit.
  4. Regular service can take up to two weeks and is only sent through mail. Rush service provides a response by email within three to five business days. The original document will follow by mail.

Additional information

  1. A copy of a survey is to be submitted for zoning letter of compliance requests. Zoning comments are based on the survey submitted. Submitting a current survey will ensure accuracy on our part.
  2. An accurate description of the proposed use(s) of the property will ensure accuracy on our part.
