Uptown Waterloo Public Square General Information
 

The City of Waterloo, in conjunction with the consulting team of GSP Group and Joe Somfay Architect Inc., has completed the Uptown Waterloo Public Square Study and Design Project. 

The site is approximately 0.2 hectares (ha) in size and is flanked on the west by Waterloo Town Square (Shoppers Drug Mart entrance) and on the east by King Street.  The railway tracks and the newly opened Willis Way define the north and south edges respectively.  View a map of the site in Adobe PDF.



 
Construction Tender Award
 

On July 23, 2007, Council approved the final design for the public square based on public input and programming requirements.  The project team has since completed both detailed design and construction drawing preparation, and has received the required approvals from local agencies. 

The Public Square project was tendered February 5, 2008 and closed on March 3, 2008.  Of four submitting firms, Gateman Milloy was the lowest bidder at $3,430,812.00 (excl. GST).  On May 5, 2008 Council approved recommendations contained in staff report DS-08-05.1 and awarded the tender to Gateman Milloy with a reduced tender value of $2,848,922 (excl. GST).

Background
 
Phase I involved extensive public consultation to determine the most appropriate use for this site.  On July 10, 2006, the Discussion Paper was presented to Council.  The Discussion Paper summarized research findings, and presented a range of five appropriate options for achieving the goals of this study.  On September 11, 2006, the Final Recommendation Report was tabled at council which presented the public square option as the most appropriate long-term use of this site based on many considered factors including all public input and comments received.  On September 25, 2006 Council approved staff report DS-06-56.1.
