West Side Family YMCA and District Library Plans Continue

In 2006, the City of Waterloo together with the Waterloo Public Library, the YMCA and the University of Waterloo came together to develop a proposal that would see a new library and recreation facility developed on University lands on the City's west side. This summer, that proposal is one step closer to becoming a reality as the design reaches its final stages.

The key components of this partnership include a combined west side facility that brings together the district Library with a YMCA recreation facility, the opportunity to develop 23 acres of sports fields across the west campus of UW on Westmount Road, and the servicing of 87 acres of the UW's northwest campus, that would allow continued growth for UW.

Features that are being considered for the YMCA component include a four lane lap pool with swirl pool and recreational pool attached, a fitness area, dance studio and multi-purpose exercise space, multi-purpose rooms, a gymnasium, change rooms, a track and a YMCA administration, reception and staff area.

For the library, key components include a collection of approximately 100,000 items, both print and multimedia, including collections to enhance family literacy and lifelong learning, a designated reading area for children and families, a teen zone and teen study areas, a computer technology centre, Internet workstations, and wireless access throughout the branch, a multi-purpose meeting room, which will be used for library programming, and as a community meeting space, and quiet study areas and collaborative work space.

Additional elements include a common foyer, public washrooms and shared mechanical and electrical systems as well as a potential ancillary food service area.

The design contemplates a low building emerging from the landscape, open to views from both Fischer-Hallman and Laurelwood, with ample windows and a potential central courtyard to provide natural lighting.  The building will be located on the north east corner of the site, providing a prominent street presence to individuals passing by and inviting to pedestrians and cyclists.

Current Status

Plans for the new west side Library and YMCA are moving ahead, with City Council anticipated to approve proceeding to construction on October 5th, the subject to costs being on budget. Earlier this summer Council approved the final designs and since that time the City and their architects have been putting together tender packages. If Council gives direction for construction to proceed on October 5th, it is expected construction will begin immediately, with completion in 2011.

In addition to the various facility elements noted above, the Library-YMCA is intended to be environmentally friendly building, with design features being incorporated to reduce energy consumption and waste and it is anticipated it will achieve a LEED Silver designation. A portion of the building may have a green roof, subject to cost considerations.
